Robert (Bob) Bechhold was born in Berlin, Germany on October 15, 1930 to Benno and Ilse Bechhold. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 27, 2021 in West Chester, PA.
After graduating from Yale University in 1952, Bob began his career with Western Electric while attending graduate school at Columbia University where he received his master’s degree in management engineering in 1959.
While living in NYC, he met the love of his life, Marianne Goeldlin von Tiefenau on a blind date. They married on April 11,1953 and cherished 67 years together until Marianne’s passing 7 months ago.
After spending 2 years in Pine Bluff, Arkansas where Bob was a part of the Army’s Scientific and Professional Personnel Program he and Marianne settled in East Brunswick, New Jersey where they raised 6 children. Bob loved spending time with his family especially all the fondue dinners on the back porch and the festive lobster feasts at their beach house on Long Beach Island, NJ.
After working as a financial analyst for Merck, Bob joined TWA where he would spend the next 16 years of his career. The job with TWA allowed Bob and Marianne to experience many travel adventures across the world, including the Hawaiian Islands, Europe, and Tahiti. They nurtured their love for travel and passed it onto their six children, who were blessed to join them on many summer trips.
After leaving TWA Bob spent 2 years as Director of Finance and Administration for the New York City law firm Mudge Rose before semi-retiring on Sanibel Island, FL. Semi-retirement found him owning a popular pizza restaurant on Sanibel for the next 15 years, allowing him the time to cruise the gulf and bay in his Boston Whaler. In addition, it was common to see Bob on his bike covering many miles on the Island. After leaving Sanibel, Bob and Marianne fully retired and moved to Ft Myers where Bob continued boating, expanded his love of reading and of course perfected napping in the warm Florida sunshine.
To be closer to family, Bob and Marianne moved to West Chester, PA in 2015 and lived happily at Wellington at Hershey’s Mill. They enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren especially when they could be together at the Jersey shore.
Bob will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, love of family and of course his favorite Spitzbuben cookies his daughter Laurie continued to make for him when Mom was no longer able. Our family will always remember Dad for his unending love and devotion to Marianne who he was always there for in her time of need. He is surely smiling to finally be reunited with her again.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Marianne and survived by his son Chris and wife Becky of Charleston, SC, his daughter Karen and husband John Jobin of Denver CO, his daughter Laurie and husband Scott Watson of Thornton, PA, his daughter Susie Bechhold of Newtown Square PA, his daughter Lynne and husband Paul Daus of Sugar Land TX, and his daughter Kim Bechhold of Albuquerque, NM, grandchildren Christina Bechhold and husband Drew Russ, Claire Bechhold and husband Erik Johnson, Bob Jobin and wife Julie, Lauren Jobin and husband Matt Atkinson, Courtney Watson and husband Anthony Scalia, Ryan Watson and wife Missy, Kelly and Jimmy Daus, Allie, Caroline and Kristen Federici, and great grandchildren Peyton and Chase Watson, Harper Scalia, Lottie Atkinson, Cece Russ and Tate Johnson.
